In
the 1960's much building work was done as part of the re-positioning of
the choir and organ console at the back of the church. During this work
the crypt was opened, entered though a stairs from the Chancel under the
floor near
the rood screen. It stretches under the South Aisle.
Unfortunately the wooden shelving on which the coffins rested had collapsed. The state of the remains was such that it was decided that the crypt should be resealed immediately and left alone. However some photographs were taken. Here is the view of the stairs down to the crypt, showing clearly the brick arches. These stairs are now sealed under the tiled floor. Here is the jumble of lead covered coffins which were discovered within the crypt, not all intact. |
