How to find Great St Mary's Church, Sawbridgeworth (Printable page)
Sawbridgeworth is on the Herts/Essex border, mid way between London and Cambridge and it's about six miles south of London Stansted Airport. It is situated between Harlow and Bishop's Stortford. There is a good train service from London Liverpool Street station. Click here for the timetable.
By road from the south and from London: Travel up the M11 to Junction 7and take the A414 northwards (it is the second exit from the roundabout and it goes past a Little Chef and petrol station). Go straight at every roundabout and onto the A1184 and eventually you will arrive in Sawbridgeworth. Turn right at the White Lion inn down Bell Street.
By road from the north: At Junction 8 of the M11 (near Stansted Airport) turn right, taking the exit just past the Motorway services (keeping to the nearside lane). At the next roundabout turn left towards Bishop's Stortford, past the Golf Club. Carry on until you go downhill to a crossroads at which there are traffic lights. Turn left. At the mini-roundabout turn right over the railway bridge and follow the A1184 all the way through to Sawbridgeworth.
When you reach Sawbridgeworth, which is clearly signposted, go straight at the double mini-roundabout, past the Total petrol station on your left. Immediately over the pedestrian crossing turn left into Bell Street.
Parking: There is a large public car park half way down Bell Street (Pay and Display). The church has a small car park but this quickly fills up and during the week entranced is stopped by electronically controlled bollards.
The bollards are always opened for free parking for services, subect to spaces being available.
The church is at the end of Bell Street.
Access: The path through the churchyard is wide and flat. The main porch has some steps down which are wide but wheelchair users will need help. Alternatively a door can be opened on the North side of the church with level access. Inside the floor is mostly flat and Churchwardens will be pleased to show you good places to sit in your wheelchair. There is a sound amplification system with a T-loop for people with hearing aids. Large print versions of service books and hymn books are available on request.
